Maps of the night sky are a little different to regularly maps. They are round and they are a little different to read. With regular maps you usually find where you are first and then the place you want to get to. Sky maps or charts and planispheres are not read same way because you are not trying to find where you are or where you going to. You are trying to find a constellation or a planet, the bad thing is that everything that we observe in night sky moves and the earth moves too, so it can be tricky to find, if you do not know how to do it.
Los mapas celestes son un poco diferentes a los mapas normales. Son circulares y se leen de diferente manera. Con los mapas terrestres normalmente primero encuentras dónde estás ubicado y después el sitio al que quieres ir. Los mapas celestes o los planisferios son distintos porque no estás intentando encontrar dónde estás o a donde vas. Estarás intentando encontrar una constelación o planeta, lo malo es que todo lo que observamos en el cielo por la noche se mueve y la tierra también se mueve, así que puede ser complicado si no sabes como hacerlo.
There are different maps of the sky, you could have a map or planisphere. A simple round map with all the stars and maybe the planets that might appear that month or you could have a planisphere. Planispheres are made to last a year (it normally says on the planisphere for what year it is for).
Hay diferentes mapas del cielo nocturno, podrías tener un mapa o planisferio. Un simple mapa circular con todas las estrellas y planetas que aparezcan ese mes o un planisferio. Los planisferios son anuales, normalmente viene escrito para que año son validos.
Regardless of which one you use there are a couple of basic things that are the same on how to read them.
The edge of the map is the horizon. (red line)
The centre of the map is the highest point in the sky (green line). Imagine that the map is like a cupula.
Sin importar cual escojas para leer, hay un par de reglas básicas en como leerlos.
El borde del mapa es el horizonte. (linea roja)
El centro del mapa es el punto más alto del cielo (linea verde). Imagina que el mapa es una cúpula.
3. To start reading it, choose a part of the sky to look at, for example: the south. Face south and try to find the biggest and brightest constellations. I normally look for Orion or Orion´s belt. It a big constellation and is easy to spot. Depending on whether you live in the northern hemisphere or the south, you will see different constellations. Make sure that when you get a map of the sky or a planisphere is the right latitude for your region.
3. Para empezar a leerlo, escoge una parte del cielo a la que mirar, por ejemplo: el sur. Mira hacia el sur e intenta encontrar las más grandes y brillantes constelaciones. Yo normalmente busco Orión o el cinturón de Orión. Es una constelación grande y fácil de ver. Dependiendo si vives en el hemisferio norte o en el sur, veras diferentes constelaciones. Asegúrate de que cuando consigues un mapa o planisferio sea de la latitud correcta para tu región.
(I used to live in England a few years back and now I live in Spain, the latitude is different, here in Spain and I can see some different constellations, especially in summer.)
(Hace unos años vivía en Inglaterra y ahora vivo en España, la latitud no es la misma, aquí puedo ver algunas constelaciones diferentes, especialmente en verano.)
Once you have located the big constellation you can start reading the map and look what constellations it has on either side. Then you can find the one you wanted to observe.
Una vez que veas una de las constelaciones grandes ya puedes ir leyendo el mapa e ir mirando que constelaciones tiene a su lado para luego encontrar la que tu quieras ver.
As you can see in the big picture the planisphere have the months written on the edge. It has numbers that correlated to the days of the month and the hours. With planisphere you can move its different parts to choose the date and the hour and it will saw exactly what it is in the sky at that moment.
Como puedes ver en la imagen grande el planisferio tiene escrito los meses del año en el borde. También tiene numeros que se corresponden a los días del mes y a las horas. Con el planisferio puedes mover sus diferentes partes para elegir la fecha y hora; mostrará exactamente que hay en el cielo en ese momento.
